More photos from Bloem

We enjoyed a braai at the Fourie's last evening with Dr. Ivan Horak from the University of Pretoria joining us as well. Rykie and Elizabeth ate worst, steak and chicken expertly prepared by Leon. Today I am at Clinvet, which is several miles from Bloemfontein in the countryside.

Update from Bloemfontein

It is Wednesday morning and we have hit the ground running this day as the sleep/eating schedules are getting adjusted. Elizabeth is off to Christian Revival Church where she may visit and AIDS clinic. I am working with flea eggs today.

Arrived Safely in Bloemfontein

Just a brief note for those following our trip...we arrived safely and on time in Bloem last evening. It is early spring here so the mornings are very cool but the days are bright and warm. We do not expect it to rain while we are here, that is more in Oct-February. I am at Clinvet where Leon has an amazing animal research facility...probably the best in South Africa. Five families live on the property, which I think is about 50 acres. After a brief tour of the facilities I am at work designing experiments on ectoparasites...probably biting lice (Bovicola) and cat fleas. I will include some photos on the next posting as I forgot the cable for my camera. The time difference is six hours. The trip was 21 hours in duration.

This photo was taken in July when 38 of us were in Bayou La Batre, AL for a week-long work mission to repair hurricane-damaged homes. To view our video go to:

Elizabeth and I are heading to S. Africa on August 27 for two weeks in Bloemfontein with Leon Fourie and his family to do research on ectoparasite control.
